The Information Retrieval (IR) group* at the Hong Kong University
of Science and Technology is hiring Post Doctorates to participate
in our projects. We have several projects covering the following topics:
- Query processing and optimization in a distributed object environment:
Object partitioning, caching, indexing, and query decomposition;
in additional to theoretical investigation, benchmarking (e.g., with
OO7) and prototyping are planned.
- Information discovery and management; development of WWW index and
search engine (see URL below), distributed, agent-based WWW index
and search engine; theoretical investigation and software development;
mobile/wireless WWW; application of object technologoies, Java,
Javascript, object-oriented servers (aka Jigsaw) in the development
of distributed Internet based applications.
- Indexing and retrieval of text databases and the application of
neural networks on text categorization; experimental evaluation and
analysis of performance, application on categorizing information
on WWW.
The Post Doctorate will conduct research within the broad scope of
the group's research directions and participate in the supervision
of graduate and undergraduate students and full-time research assistants.
Since the projects are very broad in scope and, owing to the particular
situation of Hong Kong, we emphasize both research (in the academic sense)
as well as system development; Applicants must excel at at least one aspect.
Funding is available for 2 years, but contract is yearly based, renewable
at the end of the first year. Opening is available immediately (Work visa
application, however, will take 2-4 months). Applicants from Hong Kong
and overseas are welcome.
