We have several projects covering the following topics: - Query processing and optimization in a distributed object environment: Object partitioning, caching, indexing, and query decomposition; in additional to theoretical investigation, benchmarking (e.g., with OO7) and prototyping are planned. - Information discovery and management; development of WWW index and search engine (see URL below), distributed, agent-based WWW index and search engine; theoretical investigation and software development; mobile/wireless WWW; application of object technologoies, Java, Javascript, object-oriented servers (aka Jigsaw) in the development of distributed Internet based applications. - Indexing and retrieval of text databases and the application of neural networks on text categorization; experimental evaluation and analysis of performance, application on categorizing information on WWW. The Post Doctorate will conduct research within the broad scope of the group's research directions and participate in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students and full-time research assistants. Since the projects are very broad in scope and, owing to the particular situation of Hong Kong, we emphasize both research (in the academic sense) as well as system development; Applicants must excel at at least one aspect. Funding is available for 2 years, but contract is yearly based, renewable at the end of the first year. Opening is available immediately (Work visa application, however, will take 2-4 months). Applicants from Hong Kong and overseas are welcome.
