Subject: Job opening for Ontology Researcher
============== ONTOLOGY RESEARCHER SOUGHT ==============
We have an opening for a doctoral level researcher in Ontology
construction. This will involve the construction of ontologies for the
DARPA High Performance Knowledge Base (HPKB) initiative as well as the
Joint Forces Air Component Commander (JFACC) programs. We are seeking
candidates who are interested in applying knowledge based technology to
larger problems than have heretofore been attempted. The resulting
system will be stressed in real world applications. This requires
extending existing techniques and proving the viability of AI methods.
The ontology development itself will involve the construction of domain
models and the design and development of tools to assist in the
browsing, editing and maintenance of large scale ontologies. The
position requires the construction of systems and demonstrations of
their abilities at regular intervals. The ontologies will be
constructed using PowerLoom, a knowledge representation language being
developed at ISI. Travel may also be required.
In addition to the specific tasks associated with these projects,
researchers at ISI are expected to participate in professional
activities in their field and to publish in scientific journals and
conference proceedings. An additional benefit is the close interactions
with top caliber researchers in ISI's intelligent systems division,
including several AAAI Fellows.
The ideal candidate will have doctoral degree in Computer Science
specializing in Artificial Intelligence or a related field. Experience
in the area of Knowledge Representation or Object-Oriented Design
Methodologies is a definite asset. Knowledge of Lisp preferred. Prior
knowledge of PowerLoom is not required, but experience with a KL-ONE
style knowledge representation language would be an asset.
============= INFORMATION SCIENCES INSTITUTE ==============
The Information Sciences Institute (ISI), located in Marina del Rey, is
a research facility of the School of Engineering of the University of
Southern California. ISI is involved in a broad spectrum of information
processing research, and in the development of advanced computer, VLSI,
and communication technology and systems. ISI maintains close academic
ties with the school, particularly with the Departments of Computer
Science and Electrical Engineering. USC/ISI was ranked among the top 20
U.S. computer research laboratories in a Business Week survey (6/23/97).
